The pressure should be applied by the thumb and forefinger side of your fist on one side of the crack and the fleshy part of your fist on the other.

When you’re climbing it’s a good idea to keep your arms as straight as possible.

If your arms are bent and held in close to your body for long periods of time they can fatigue easily. Fatigue is something you definitely want to avoid because if you’re getting tired or cramping during a climb it can be very dangerous. It’s also a good idea to use your legs as much as possible because your legs are much more powerful than your arms and are capable of supporting your weight for long periods of time.

Because you’ll be using your legs more than your arms, footwork is very important. Most of the time you’ll have the majority of your weight on your big toes and the balls of your feet. A technique called edging uses that part of the foot to support your weight on a small edge or foothold. When there’s not much of an edge you can use a technique called smearing where you try to get as much of the surface of your climbing shoe in contact with the rock as possible. By doing this you can get a grip on a relatively flat spot that does not have an edge.

Another technique that is more strenuous and should only be used sparingly is known as a heel hook. When there are no good footholds below waist level you’ll need to put your foot up high and use your heel to hook onto an edge that is a little higher. You would be using your foot almost like a third hand to help pull yourself up into a better position
